South Carolina Has Most Accident-Prone Drivers

Auto insurers collect reams of data about drivers and accidents, and they can easily compare circumstances in different states. A recent study published by Insurify offers some revealing insights about accident rates in South Carolina and other states. This information has acquired even more importance as the corona virus is tapering off in some states and leading to increased use of the nation’s highways.

The Methodology

Insurify gathered accident information from applications for automobile insurance. The company’s data base contains information on more than 2.5 million driviers. Insurify then compared per capita accident information from over twenty large American cities. The results of the study were not favorable for South Carolina drivers.

How Did South Carolina Cities Compare in The Study?

The South Carolina city with the lowest percentage of drivers with a prior at-fault auto accident was Spartanburg, where the data showed 17.42 % of drivers with at least one prior accident where they were found to be at fault. The next lowest was Summerville, where 17.5% of drivers were found to have a prior accident. Greer finished the study in 13th place, with 17.83% of its drivers having been found at fault for at least one prior accident. Charleston ranked 12th, with 18.06% of its drivers having at least one prior accident. Goose Creek followed Charleston by a very thin 0.08% of all drivers with at least one prior accident.

Rock Hill was in 5th place with 18.7% of its drivers having at least one prior accident. Finally, the No. 1 city in the study was Johns Island, S.C. The study found that 21.65% of its drivers had caused at least one accident before the data were analyzed. Two significant data were revealed by the study: South Carolina had more cities in the top twenty – 7 – and, Johns Island was the only city in the study where more than 20% of all drivers sampled had been at fault for at least one accident.

The study did not report on deaths or physical injuries caused by these accidents, but these many accidents undoubtedly caused a significant number of deaths and serious injuries.
